rough schedule

Full contest schedule and heat sheets will be posted by Friday, Nov 12th, but here is a rough schedule for which events will surf what day:

SATURDAY:
  • 18-24 Shortboard
  • 25+ Shortboard
  • 40+ Shortboard
  • 18-39 Longboard
  • 40+ Longboard
  • 18+ Women Shortboard
  • Women Longboard
  • Expression Session
  • Team

SUNDAY:
  • 14 & Under Shortboard
  • 17 & Under Shortboard
  • Open Shortboard
  • 17 & Under Longboard
  • Open Longboard
  • 17 & Under Women Shortboard
  • Women Twin/Single Fin
  • Twin/Single Fin Open
  • Little Turkeys

***This rough schedule is not an order of events, just a list.  All events listed on each day will finish the same day - no events will start one day and finish the next if we can help it.  Also, I'll do my best to keep each event running on the day I listed above, but can't make any concrete promises until I fully create the heat sheets.***

Explanation - There are multiple ESA/NSSA events scheduled for Saturday the 13th.  To help minimize overlap, I've scheduled all the youth competition for Sunday.   Additionally, it will be a bit cleaner on Sunday, which will help the groms out.  For the Expression Session, I'm thinking onshore winds are better than offshore, so I went with Saturday for that event.

Awards for all Saturday events will be given out at the banquet at RB Hunt that evening.  If you cannot make it to the banquet, you can pick up your award/winnings from us next week sometime.  We're not going to announce  or give out awards on the beach - yeah, that's our leverage to get you to the dinner!  :)  Sunday awards will be done on the beach immediately following the final heat.

Check back on Friday to see what the final schedule is - in the meantime, pray for surf! (oh, wait, you did already because it's coming)

live webcast

No - not a WCT quality webcast with Pottz and Blakey chatting it up.  We just signed up for a justin.tv account and are going to stick a webcam on the scaffolding.  You won't be able to see much, but you'll be able to hear the announcer and know what heat is going on.  Here is the link below:

http://www.justin.tv/christiansurfers/

We hope to have this up and running at the first heat Saturday morning, but things rarely go according to plan.  Good news is once we are up we should be running all day quite easily, and you'll be able to view the contest from the comfort of your internet connection.

I did upload a sample video of the quality that you'll be experiencing.  As you can see it's nothing special, but neat to have a new feature to the contest that we've never done before.

forecast

All the sites are in alignment that the swell will be pretty significant this weekend.  Most have the face heights in between 6-8 foot, with a few even looking for it to be larger.

Winds are likely to be onshore on Saturday, with an offshore patch Sunday AM before it swings back to onshore for the afternoon.  Right now, onshores are supposed to be moderate, 10mph or less, which is certainly surfable/contestable.

We've got a high tide it the middle of the day, so we've got our fingers crossed for good insiders for a large portion of the contest day.  Hopefully, only the first and last couple of heats will have to deal with the "low tide blues" we get in St. Augustine.

I'll do my best later this week to schedule the events appropriately with regard to tide and wind.  As I have said, the Expression Session gets priority, with other hotly contested divisions falling behind it.

Check back later this week for the schedule and forecast / explanation.

mo' money

Entry Fee Policy - Your name will not go in the heat sheet unless money is attached to your entry form. Writing "will pay on beach" on the entry form does not reserve your spot or exempt you from the beach entry fee of $10. Beach entry is on a first come, first serve basis and will begin at 7AM each day.

Money Back for Unsurfed Heats Policy - If you want to surf in the Turkey, but aren't sure about all the divisions being on the right day, go ahead and send your entry form in with the money attached. If you have a conflicting schedule and let me know by 12PM EST Friday (by email or phone), you can get your money back. If I reserve your spot and you don't show, however, no money back.

Explanation of Divisions

Since I've already gotten a few questions about the different divisions we do, here's an explanation...

  • Shortboard - both genders, can surf up or down if you'd like
  • Longboard - both genders, pretty self-explanatory
  • Women - have to be female for all these heats
  • Team - 2 person team, will surf against another 2 person team, single highest wave per team member counts toward team total, team with highest point total wins, you can name your own team, both team members have to pay individually for their entry
  • Twin or Single - one or two fins only, there is a women-only division and an open
  • Expression Session - best single maneuver wins $1000, second best wins $500, this will be a 10-person final heat that will last at least 40 minutes, prelims will be 4-person, 2008 winners (Chris & Keto) are seeded into the final already, same price as all the other heats
  • Little Turkeys - 10 and younger, can be helped into waves by their parents (this division is a PAID division, unlike 2008 when it was free)
Shoot me an email if you have a question that's not answered here.

Turkey Classic 10

Welcome to the Turkey Classic 10 blog.  This will fill you in all on contest-related details which do not appear on our main webpage.  Here, we will post - heat sheets, schedule, photos, videos, swell and wind forecasts, and any other happenings that relate to you as a surfer in the contest.

If you have yet to surf in the Turkey, we wish this contest to be a fun event devoid of the pressures of points-driven contests.  We have a variety of divisions, of which you have the chance to surf with others you may not normally surf with.  From "Little Turkeys" to the "Expression Session" pros, we seek for the contest to make an impact, albeit brief, on the competitors and surf fans alike.
