day 2 wrap-up

While driving down to the contest site, I got a call from a competitor asking if the contest was still on. The reason he called is that the surf was supposed to be flat, and he was trying to save himself the drive in case it was off. I was stoked to call him back when I first saw the surf - it wasn't Indo or even Hatteras, but it was contestable and almost looked fun. The surf got better thru the morning heats as the winds continued to ease, one of the judges even commented that they were seeing higher scores today over yesterday. Here are some of the highlights:

- Keto Burns continued the run he had yesterday, winning every heat and every final save 2. Keto was the unofficial "ironman" of the event, surfing a total of 15 heats, and posting double-digit heat tallies in nearly all of them.
- Haley Watson from Flagler surfed all the way to the finals of 17 & Under Shortboard, beating a few guys along the way. Haley also won all the women's divisions she entered.
- After much debate, for the first time ever we judged the Little Turkeys! Each competitor, however, was awarded with a trophy and a prize package from the division sponsor, the Alligator Farm.

Full heat sheets and results from the entire event are posted below. It was a lot of fun running the 2008 Turkey Classic, we hope to be at it again next year. See you there!

day 1 wrap-up

Lots of good surfing went on at the Turkey Classic. One of the highlights was the PIT tow-at demo, where surfers got whipped into the waves at 30mph. Not many maneuvers were completed, but the skies in St. Augustine were full of flying surfers today! Other great parts of the event were the Gator Wrasslin' event, where inflatable alligators were the vehicle of choice in the waves. Only 1 competitor made it all the way outside, but it was a blast watching everyone give it a try and go head over heels in the process.

Full heat sheets and schedule for today's and tomorrow's heats will be posted later tonight - check the sheets below - they will be overwritten with the results and updates.

The dinner/awards/video/photo slideshow is happening tonight at 7:00PM at "The Meeting Room" inside Ponce de Leon Mall. Come join us and check out the action from the day on the big screen - even if you didn't surf the contest you are welcome to attend. Free to competitors and event sponsors, $5 (reduced!) for all others.

Entry Fee & Return Policy

Entry Fee Policy - Your name will not go in the heat sheet unless money is attached to your entry form. Writing "will pay on beach" on the entry form does not reserve your spot or exempt you from the beach entry fee of $5. Beach entry is on a first come, first serve basis and will begin at 7AM each day.

Money Back for Unsurfed Heats Policy - If you want to surf in the Turkey, but aren't sure about all the divisions being on the right day, go ahead and send your entry form in with the money attached. If you have a conflicting schedule and let me know about it in time for me to fill your slot with someone else, you can get your money back. If I reserve your spot and you don't show, however, no money back. (keep in mind that the day of the contest is very busy - a voicemail 2 minutes before your heat does not suffice as adequate notice)

all U14 & U17 & Little Turkey heats to run sunday nov 16

There is an NSSA contest in NSB on Saturday. In light of this, I've received a request to postpone the grom heats until Sunday.

All 14 & Under, 17 & Under, and Little Turkey heats will run Sunday. This includes shortboard, longboard, women, and "anything but 3" heats. Also, since a lot of the groms like to surf the open heats as well I will attempt to fit that in as well (no promises, though, check back nov 14 for official schedule).

location, location, location

Getting some questions about where the event is going to be held - so time for an explanation:

There are 4 different sites we are permitted to use - North Beach (or Crossovers), Vilano Beach, north side of the Pier, and 10th Street. Depending on forecasted swell and wind, a call will be made on the event location for Saturday's heats. This will be announced on this website on Friday the 14th. A call will also be made on Saturday for Sunday's heats. Again, this will be posted on this website (as well as announced on the beach) by Saturday afternoon.

What is the reason for the many different venues? Having surfed a lot of events myself, seems like every time a location is picked, the next jetty over or the "spot around the corner" is going off while the contest site just gets worse and worse. Our hope is that the Turkey Classic will take full advantage of the conditions to make the contest as good as possible for the contestants. Sure, it's a lot more work for the volunteers, but we're just trying to do our part to get the best surf we can.

4th Costa Crown Ticket Drawing

3 of the 4 Costa Crown tickets went to the division winners in Shortboard, Womens, and Longboard. There was a 4th ticket that was up for grabs - anyone who surfed all 3 events got a chance. There were only 4 people who surfed all three events - a 25% chance of winning a trip to Costa Rica! This video is the official drawing for the 4th ticket.

And the winner is...

If you won a division, or if you are the 4th ticket winner, Cal Fisher from CS Daytona will be getting in contact with you and setting the itinerary.
